Henry's Avalanche Talk
Henry’s Avalanche Talk (HAT) is a snow safety organisation dedicated to providing information and training for skiers and snowboarders who are looking to venture off-piste. Its slogan, ‘Safety is Freedom’ reflects HAT’s philosophy of skier autonomy and risk management, providing skiers with their own tools to make decisions that will help to keep them safe. HAT organises avalanche safety talks and events throughout the UK in the build up to winter and has online programs for all levels, including experienced off-piste and backcountry skiers or those that are thinking about leaving the marked ski slopes for the first time. The goal of HAT is to ensure skiers, ‘have fun and stay safe’.
Henry Schniewind, the creator of Henry’s Avalanche Talk, is an internationally renowned snow and avalanche expert. Henry studied avalanche forecasting in Montana and then moved to the French Alps where he works as an off-piste ski guide and director of Henry’s Avalanche Talk. He has given over 750 talks and courses to well over 10,000 people in the last 25 years including presenting at international snow science conferences. He has written many papers and articles, published by the Ski Club GB, The Telegraph, The Times and InTheSnow Magazine amongst others. Henry holds a fully certified French Ski Instructor Degree from the Ecole Nationale de Ski et d’Alpinisme. Henry’s Avalanche Talk is endorsed by ANENA (The French National Association for Snow and Avalanche Study) and sponsored by ORTOVOX. Henry is also a certified Professional Member of the American Avalanche Association.
